Théoden was king of Rohan in The Lord of the Rings. When he became old, he fell under the sway of his advisor Gríma, called by others Wormtongue and secretly in the service of the traitor Saruman. Gandalf helped him to see the light, and strengthened, he pardoned his nephew Eomer and sprang into battle at a crucial moment; see Battle of Helm's Deep.
