As of 2008, only three major party Vice Presidential candidates have been women or minorities: [[Geraldine Ferraro]], [[Walter Mondale]]'s running mate in 1984, who is female, [[Joe Lieberman]], [[Al Gore]]'s running mate in 2000, who is Jewish, and [[Sarah Palin]], [[John McCain]]'s running mate in 2008. So far, none has been elected. While officially none of these candidates were chosen for their gender or religion, many people have speculated that they were chosen partially to appeal to voters of their group.
