Sir Ian McKellen (born 1939) is an Oscar-nominated and Tony Award-winning British actor and gay activist. He is best known for his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings series of films. He also appeared as himself in Extras with Ricky Gervais. McKellen was knighted in 1991 for outstanding contributions to theater.
