Some early Christian churches called themselves "The Way" and the adherents were called Nazarenes (after the city of [[Nazareth]] where Jesus lived). Some early Christian churches called themselves "The Way" and the adherents were called Nazarenes after the city of [[Nazareth]] where Jesus lived. The origin of both the name Nazarenes and the City of Nazareth may be found in the Hebrew root for both words - NeTSeR. A Netser is a growth from the roots or stock of a tree. Netser was used to prophetically signify the coming descendent who would come from Jessie and who would rule over Israel and be filled with the Spirit of God. "A shoot springs from the stock of Jessie, a new growth/branch (Netser) thrusts from his roots, and the Spirit of the LORD will rest upon him." Isaiah 11:1
