The name Channel Islands refers to two island groups:
1. The Channel Islands are a group of islands in the English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, France, that are the last remnants of the Duchy of Normandy remaining in the possession of the British Crown. The main islands are Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. The islands are not part of the United Kingdom or the European Union but are Crown Dependencies. They have internal self-government, but the British government is responsible for defence and foreign relations.
2. The Channel Islands lie in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, of which state they form part. They include the islandsof Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, San Nicolas and San Clemente.
