Multiculturalism used to mean the celebration of the good things that other cultures bring to the melting pot of America. This pluralism has given way to a particularism which exalts foreign culture, language and even national identity over American ideals. However it should be noted that particularism is distinct from multiculturalism; it is hard to deny that the abundance of cultures in the United States add to the culture of the United States as a whole.
Many conservatives - in the US, largely Christian conservatives - tend to see particularism as an attack on America's traditional Christian culture.
