:The Western Roman Empire had been ruled by Constantine, who converted to Christianity, then made it the official religion of Rome. He then went on to fight the ruler of the eastern half in A.D. 314. Constantine defeated the East, killing its emperor, Licinius, uniting both halves into one very powerful Roman Empire .... The Byzantine Empire was always the wealthier of the two, and Western Rome declined to some extent because of economic reasons, while the Eastern half fell to an attack during a weakened complex governmental system.
