A cathode is the negative electrode in a battery. When it is connected by an electrical conductor to the anode, or positive terminal, electrons flow out of the cathode to the anode, creating electrical current. As electrons build up at the anode, it experiences a buildup of negative charge. When this cancels out the anode's original positive charge, the battery has been exhausted and is no longer usable[1].
