In the United States, a Juris Doctor is a first professional degree that is usually a prerequisite to bar admission. While commonly referred to as a "Doctor of Law", some law schools refer to it as a Doctor of Jurisprudence. The degree is conferred after a three year course of study at a law school, which will generally require a undergraduate degree for admission. Many state bars have set stringent requirements for amount and content of instruction, leading to standardization of curriculum among schools.
