The Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, is the most important annual event in the German film industry. It was established by the American liberation force in Berlin in the decades following the war. The city before the war was known for it's culture and sophistication, which had collapsed under the Nazi regime. Hundred's of thousands of tickets are sold each year and thousands of filmakers participate. In '99 "The Thin Red Line" received the top prize. The film's during the festival are usually screened at CinemaxX and Cinestar, and various others, Arsenal too.
