Cesar Chavez was a labor organizer who started one of the first farm workers unions and organized boycotts of farmers who opposed unionization. His work led to many improvements in the working conditions experienced by farmhands, and the American appreciation for his socially progressive vision of agricultural labor practices is evident in the fact that his birthday is a holiday in four states and that the United States Postal Service has released a stamp in his honor.
Early Life
He was born on a farm near Yuma, Arizona owned by his parents on March 27, 1927. His family lost their holdings during the Great Depression and moved to California to work in the fields.
Cesar was exposed firsthand to the bad working conditions of migrant laborers, which is believed to have shaped the direction his life took. As a child, he began to develop a nonviolent worldview, which he practiced his entire life.
He enlisted in the Navy to escape from the farms though military service was not something he enjoyed.
Death
On April 23, 1993 he passed away of natural causes. It has been speculated that the fasting he did was a factor in his demise.
