A minuet or menuet is a French dance which flourished during the Baroque and Classical periods. Associated with the upper classes, it was typically set in a leisurely tempo and in 3/4 time. It later became a staple of symphonic writing, first in the symphonies of the Mannheim School and of Joseph Haydn, in which it formed either the second or third movement. Later, in the music of Beethoven, this dance quickened in tempo and became known as a scherzo.
