Elizabeth "Liddy" Dole, born July 29, 1936 (age 90), is the wife of Bob Dole, a Republican from Kansas and former candidate for President of the United States of America. She is a former Senator from the state of North Carolina. Her maiden name was Hanford.
Following the retirement of Senator Jesse Helms, Elizabeth Dole ran for his seat and won. She served as Chairwoman of the Republican Senatorial Committee in the 2006 election cycle, but did not enjoy a level of success, as the Republicans lost six seats and became the minority party. Dole attended Duke University and Harvard Law School.
Dole, who will be up for re-election in 2008 surprised many with a strong showing for her fundraising in for the second quarter of 2007. Her popularity increased in North Carolina following her opposition to President Bush's Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act.
Dole was defeated for re-election in 2008 by Democratic opponent Kay Hagan.[1]
