A star sapphire is a sapphire with an inclusion of asterism, very small mineral deposits of rutile (titanium dioxide) that naturally form within the sapphire to create rays (up to six) that reflect light, a white appearance on an otherwise blue-colored gemstone.
The Star of India, the largest known star sapphire in the world, weighs 563.35 carats (112.67 grams). It is almost flawless in appearance, and even has star rays on both sides of the gemstone.
