Wellington began as a service town to the horticulture industry that first came to the region. The introduction of the rail line greatly increased its economy and productivity. The town services a region a population of approximately 280,000 people. The region includes a number of mining and fishing communities, the Joint Defence Space Research Facility and tourist attractions at Ulur-Kata Tjuta National Park.
