She led a bloody revolt against the Romans, who had annexed her kingdom, disrespected her and [[rape]]d her daughters. After initial successes, routing the Roman ninth legion, and burning the major towns of Camulodonum (modern-day [[Colchester]]) and Londinium (modern-day [[London]]), along with most of their inhabitants, so thoroughly that the thick layer of ash left is still clearly visible today, the Roman forces rallied against the revolt and Boudicea is said to have committed [[suicide]].
