A self-driving car requires no driver, and has been the stuff of science fiction at least as far back as the robot cabs of Robert Heinlein's Between Planets. The US Government's DARPA Challenge produced some credible self-driving cars, with teams from Stanford and Carnegie-Mellon winning prizes in 2005 and 2007. A recent contender has been Google, which recently announced it had tested autonomous cars (with a safety driver) on public roads. [1]
