Driving under the influence (DUI, also known as drunk driving) is a crime in all 50 U.S. states and in most countries in the civilized world. In the U.S., the definition of "drunk" has been codified in terms of blood alcohol level with .05% to .10% being the maximum allowable concentration. In some places, DUI is known by another acronym, DWI, which stands for "driving while intoxicated".
DUI can be a serious crime that can result in loss of innocent life, imprisonment, loss or suspension of the driver's license and seizure of the automobile by the state. Multiple offenses are particularly serious.
In New York, a repeat offense of DUI is a felony.[1]
