Irish (Gaeilge) is a Celtic language spoken in a number of areas of Ireland known as the Gaeltacht; it is the official language of the Republic of Ireland although the population is mostly English-speaking. It is also a recognized minority language in Northern Ireland. Irish is similar in form to Scottish Gaelic, spoken in parts of the Scottish Highlands.
