George Wilcken Romney (July 8, 1907–July 26, 1995) was a successful U.S. businessman, having chaired the American Motors Corporation. He was the 43rd Governor of Michigan from 1963-1969 and served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Richard Nixon from 1969-1973. Romney was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in 1968.
As governor he sanctioned a personal and corporate income tax and promoted civil rights legislation. A moderate Republican, he dramatically expanded government spending from his predecessor. Upon leaving public life he founded the National Centre for Voluntary Activity.
