James Rodney Schlesinger (born February 15, 1929) served as Secretary of Defence under President's Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford from 1973-1975, a period which was marked by the final stages of the Vietnam War. In 1977, he became the United States' first Secretary of Energy under President Jimmy Carter.
