The Western Front was a narrow strip of land between Belgium and France where the Allies on one side and the Germans on the other dug a complex network trenches running from the Belgian coast to Switzerland during World War I. At that point, the war ground to a bloody and protracted stalemate. After Russia withdrew from the War following the October revolution, the Germans unleashed all of their troops on the western front, and it appeared they would win, before grinding to a halt after oustripping their supply lines. In December 1917, American troops came to the front, and in the Second Battle of the Marne, the Allies started decisively winning ground. Soon afterward, the Great War ended.
