A confederation of German lands (German: Deutscher Bund), ruled by princes and kings, existed from the Congress of Vienna in 1815 until the Peace of Prague in 1866. King William I and Otto von Bismarck pulled together the German states into one nation, Germany in 1871, with William I as Emperor.
