The Indian Orthodox Church is one of the oldest denominations of Christianity, originating in India around 52 AD, when St. Thomas the Apostle traveled to India. The church is also called Malankara Orthodox Church, Orthodox Church of the East, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Orthodox Syrian Church of the East [1]

The official title of the head of the Church is the “Catholicos of the East, Catholicos of the Apostolic throne of St. Thomas, and the Malankara Metropolitan”. The present Catholicos of the East and Malankara, His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, 22nd Malankara Metropolitan as the 9th Catholicos on 15 October 2021 at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Parumala, succeeding His Holiness Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.
