Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh, 1928 - 1987) was a 20th century artist of Polish-American origin who, starting as an advertising illustrator, was one of the pioneers of Pop Art, which used pop-culture imagery to make beautiful paintings, a paradoxical process.
He frequently collaborated with assistants in order to produce copies of his work, using the innovative silkscreen process.[1] He was also a notable experimental film-maker, directing such films as Trash, Heat, Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Andy Warhol's Dracula.
The author Gore Vidal said of him, rather unflatteringly, that "Andy Warhol is the only genius with an IQ of 60."[2]
Although he survived being shot by radical feminist Valerie Solanis in 1968, he died in 1987.
