HMAS AE2 was an E Class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy. It was originally built in the UK and travelled out to Australia in company with its sister ship HMAS AE1.[1] On 25 April 1915, captained by Lieutenant Commander Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker D.S.O., R.N., AE2 was the first submarine to successfully penetrate the Dardanelles and enter the Sea of Marmara during the ill-fated allied campaign on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. Over the following days the submarine made a number of attacks in the Sea of Marmara until 30 April when the Turkish torpedo boat Sultanhisar punctured the submarine's pressure hull resulting in an order to scuttle the vessel.[1]
The crew were captured and imprisoned.[1]
