Transliteration is the process of converting names and other words into another alphabet, without any attempt at translation.
The Japanese language has transliterated many English loan words:
- apartment => ã¢ãã¼ã (a-pa-a-to)
- Pocket Monsters => ãã±ã¢ã³ (po-ke-mo-n) See: Pokémon
Some transliterations hardly change the pronunciation at all:
- radio => ã©ã¸ãª (ra-ji-o) (RAH DEE OH)
