Twistor theory was originally developed by Roger Penrose in 1967, it is a mathematical theory that seeks to describe the geometry of four dimensional real spacetime via the geometry of 4-dimensional complex space with metric signature (2,2). It has not successfully described spacetimes with matter present.
Twistor space has also been used by Edward Witten to efficiently calculate the scattering amplitude of Feynman diagrams.
