The World Giving Index is a Charities Aid Foundation report into charitable giving worldwide.[1] The index uses data from Gallup and looked at three different areas of charity. Gallup asked people which of the following three charitable acts they have undertaken in the past month:

  • donated money to an organisation?
  • volunteered time to an organisation?
  • helped a stranger, or someone they didn’t know who needed help?

In 2011 New Zealand and Australia came at the top with 57% score followed by Ireland and Canada second equal and the United States and Switzerland third.[2] It should be noted that the index reports on individual charitable giving and not as a nation so government pledges of aid are not included in the index.

Last place went Madagascar with Ukraine and China also near the bottom.
