Fernand Anne Piestre Cormon (1845–1924) was a French painter. He was teacher of Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Henry Sene (1889-1961), Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901) among others. Cormon was awarded as member of the Legion d'Honneur. He became one of the leading historical painters of modern France.
Cormon has lengthened the shadows as if the light of truth were pursuing the guilty through the bleak plain. He uses earthy colours and vigorous brushstrokes, plastered like Courbet's. The artist insisted on anatomical accuracy and had live models pose in his studio for each figure. [1]
The Harem, 1877.
