Romania is a country in eastern Europe, situated between the Black Sea, the Carpathian Mountains and the River Danube. It shares land borders with Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Hungary and Serbia.
The population is approximately 22 million and the capital city is Bucharest.
Previously a monarchy, Romania was a Fascist member of the Axis in World War II and was subsequently a communist state and member of the Warsaw Pact until 1989. The country joined NATO on March 29, 2004, and the European Union on January 1, 2007.
