There a [[phosphate]] is broken off an ATP molecule, and the energy in that bond is released. Once the energy is released, there is usually no further use for the Adenosine Diphosphate and the phosphate. They are simply released and returned to the energy source, where energy is expended to reattach a phosphate and before it is sent out again. In some cases, however, another phosphate is removed so that more energy is released. It this case, adenosine monophosphate is returned for restructuring instead.
