The phonograph is a mechanical device for recording and reproducing sound. It was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877.[1]
The first phonograph used a cylinder and was limited to a minute or two. Early models were fragile, cumbersome, and could only be operated by experts, although Edison foresaw far-ranging uses (see dictaphone, tape recorder, record player, digital audio player).
