Osamu Tezuka (November 3, 1928 - February 9, 1989) was a legendary Japanese mangaka, also known as "The God of Manga" (which is ironic since he was an atheist). He is widely credited for introducing to manga many of the stylistic properties of manga, including the now-commonplace large round eyes.
His most well-known works include Astro Boy, Black Jack, Kimba the White Lion, Metropolis, and Princess Knight.
He also had indulged in some anti-War elements in his manga, including some brief anti-American commentary, especially during the Vietnam War. A notable (and notorious) example of this was with Astro Boy in 1967, where he had the titular character hold up an American bomber plane and force everyone to eject and smashed up several planes to save a Vietcong village, which spent enough of his energy to force him into a recharge state and resulted in his and the village's death due to another bombing raid before Astro Boy was brought back.[1]
