On 25 April 1915, captained by Lieutenant Commander Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker D.S.O., R.N., AE2 was the first submarine to successfully penetrate the [[Dardanelles]] and enter the [[Sea of Marmara]] during the ill fated allied campaign on the [[Gallipoli]] peninsula in [[Turkey]]. Over the following days the submarine made a number of attacks in the Sea of Marmara until 30 April when the Turkish torpedo boat ''Sultanhisar'' punctured the submarine's pressure hull resulting in an order to scuttle the vessel.<ref name=navy.gov.au>http://www.navy.gov.au/spc/history/ships/ae2.html</ref>
