Flunitrazepam, or Rohypnol, is a 1,4-benzodiazepine drug that has been suspected of criminal use in recent years as a "date-rape drug," though it is more commonly used as a recreational drug in the United States. It is a central nervous system depressant similar to Valium and Librium that acts both as a sedative and a hypnotic. It is smuggled into the United States (where it is illegal) from Mexico and South America (where it is legal). Like Valium, it causes temporary amnesia which can be useful for a medical operation, but also criminals have supposedly used it to take advantage of victims of a violent crime. Its effects are particularly rapid with alcohol consumption. In high doses, it can be fatal. In the United States, Flunitrazepam is classified as a Schedule IV drug.
