The Mayflower Compact provides historical evidence for the religious beginnings of our nation. It begins, "In the name of God, Amen.", and sets forth the idea that the Pilgrims had come to the New World to advance the Christian faith. - That's nice. A few problems: 1) no one denies that there were religious elements in the founding of the United States 2) The Mayflower Compact was well before the US was founded 3) Many of the people who came to the US came not for religious reasons, some colonies of the 13 original were not founded for religious but enonomic reasons, and other colonies were founded specifically for general religious freedom.
