A few days after Nelson's funeral, his fellow cyclists gathered to mourn his death with a 6-mile ghost ride, which began at the Frenship Ag barn and ended at the scene of the accident. A white bike donated by his wife was placed at the accident site along with a plaque in his honor. Following the ghost ride, the participants held a memorial service.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.fox34.com/story/38745899/cyclists-honor-david-nelson-with-ghost-ride|title=Cyclists honor David Nelson with ghost ride|publisher=Fox34.com|date=July 26, 2018|accessdate=July 27, 2018}}</ref>
