He founded The Carter Center in 1982 which has the goal of alleviating human suffering. The Center promotes democratic elections and has programmes to improve health in developing countries through the control of parasitic diseases such as Guinea Worm. It is fair to say that ex-President Carter is probably much more respected outside the United States than in his home country.

In his advanced age Jimmy Carter's mental facilities began to falter, nevertheless he continued making public speaking appearances and continues to work with Habitat for Humanity, not only as a spokesperson but as an actual house builder.  

In his advanced age Carter's mental facilities began to falter (due to a brain tumor which was successfully removed, and several falls), nevertheless he continues making public speaking appearances (though he was unable to attend the funeral of [[Billy Graham]], not due to his illness, but due to his wife's recent surgery) and continues to work with Habitat for Humanity, not only as a spokesperson but as an actual house builder. As of 2019, he is the earliest-serving of the five living U.S. presidents, the longest-lived president (and the first to reach the age of 95), the longest-retired president, the first to live forty years after initial inauguration.
