International [[Terrorism|Terrorist]] organization founded in the late 1980s, and led by [[Osama Bin Laden]].  Al Qaeda is predominantly composed of fanatical [[Sunni]] [[Islam|Muslim]].  Al Qaeda is believed to be responsible for the September 11, 2001 attack on the [[World Trade Center]] and [[Pentagon]] and the October 2000 bombing of the [[U.S.S. Cole]]. Its main weapon is fear.  Random attacks that are deadly often strike fear in helpless people. "Al Qaeda" means "the base." Osama bin Laden said that it originally referred to a training base.

Cole]], and numerous smaller attacks. The group's wing in Iraq is responsible for many of the attacks and bombings there. "Al Qaeda" means "the base" in Arabic.
