As the trial unfolded, Brooks evidently went to Waukesha to see his ex-girlfriend and mother of his 15-year-old daughter. The mother testified Brooks hit in the vehicle, after which she jumped out and called two friends. The prosecution presented photographic evidence, taken by the police, of her black eye and split lip taken a few hours later. Brooks returned and physically assaulted the two friends, as well. The friends called police, and Brooks took off, speeding in the direction of downtown where the parade was ongoing. Brooks drove through the barricades, hit parade marchers, and never attempted to stop.
