He served in the military as Colonel of the 23rd Ohio during the civil war. He was wounded at the battle of South Mountain in Maryland. For his bravery he was promoted to Brigadier General. He resigned from the army on June 8, 1865. After the war he entered into politics in his home state of Ohio.
