Champagne is a sparkling wine named after the Champagne region of northeast France. Produced not only in the Champagne region of North Eastern France but also in California, England, Australia, New Zealand and India. The French have attempted to retain the right to the term Champagne for wines from the Champagne region only but the US authorities have resisted.
In Spain, Champagne is now called Cava because of pressure from the French prior to Spain entering the European Union.
