The economy was essentially an agrarian one, with the relationship between the Lord of the Manor and his Peasants being essential to the smooth working of the realm. Trades also grew up in and around towns, with a great many craftspeople making many goods for sale on the open market. The Merchant quickly became an important person in the Medieval community, and those towns and Cities who became members of the Hanseatic League saw the well being and prosperity of their settlements increase substantially. At this stage of Medieval History however, trade was only beginning to emerge as an important part of the economy; Agriculture and the relationship to the land dominated all aspects of society.
