Tocharian was the Indo-European language spoken by people in the desert region of Western China and shows similarities to Celtic and Italic languages, suggesting its speakers had made the long migration from Europe at some stage. The Tocharians mummified their dead, and finds of cloth on these mummies show remarkable similarities to tartans used e.g. by Celts like those in Scotland. The surviving bodies show that the Tocharians were of European appearance and not like their Chinese or Mongolian neighbours.
