A red state is a state whose voters are generally conservative and who cast votes for George W. Bush in the 2000 and 2004 elections. Red states are noted for a commitment to their particular version of morality in voting, and a rejection of abortion and gay rights. Red states are generally found in the south and midwest United States.
They are known as "red states" because, during elections, major news networks color them red when it is confirmed that they have voted for a Republican president.
