The Pope (from Latin "papa", father) is the head of the Catholic church. Today the pope is Pope Benedict XVI. He strongly opposes abortion, torture, and pre-emptive war.

Line 10: Line 9:

Their opponents say that even the worst Popes failed to wreck the traditions of the Church.

Some Christian groups have identified the Bishop of Rome and the papal system as the Antichrist. This is especially true of Martin Luther and his Protestant followers. Such beliefs were later reiterated in the Westminster Confession of Faith:

−

:25.6. There is no other head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ: nor can the Pope of Rome in any sense be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the church against Christ, and all that is called God; whom the Lord shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.

−

Others see further proof of the satanic nature of Roman Catholicism in the large number of Roman Catholic clergy caught indulging in lewd homosexual and paedophile acts with small boys.

−

A recent example of such beliefs is when the Protestant Reverend Dr. Ian Paisley accused Pope John Paul II of being the Antichrist when he visited the European Parliament in 1988. Dr. Ian Paisley did so by shouting "Antichrist, I denounce you and your false teaching!" he also held up a poster reading "Pope John Paul II Antichrist". He was forcibly ejected from the chamber by non-believers.
