The West Bank is the modern name for the ancient lands of Judea and Samaria. Located west of the Jordan River near Jerusalem, it part of the historical homeland of the Jewish people. Following the Jewish diaspora, the region was invaded by neighboring Arab tribes and is currently under occupation by an Arab majority population.
The name "West Bank" was created by the government of Jordan after the War of Independence in 1948 when Arab armies overran Judea and Samaria. The land is bitterly disputed between Jewish and Arab settlers in the region. This has been within the authority of the state of Israel since the Six-Day War in 1967. The West Bank is not officially part of any country.
