Adverse possession is a method of acquiring real property under certain conditions simply through occupation of the property (without owning it) for a statutory period, typically many years. Under the common law, the occupation must be non-permissive, open enough that a reasonable property owner would realize the property was occupied, and exclusive of the public at large.
