A linear regression is a regression that is linear with respect to the unknown parameters used in the fit. A linear regression can illustrate many relationships between variables (eg., quadratic) however, in the case of exponentional or log-linear relationships a linear regression is not an appropriate statistical test.

"Least squares fitting" is the most common type of linear regression.
